Resort Lifestyle
The history of Cranbrook ties back to the 1898 when Cranbrook was named a division point for the Canadian Pacific Railway's new Crowsnet Railway. Today Cranbrook is the regional centre of the East Kootenay. With a population of almost 19,000 people, serving an area of over 60,000, Cranbrook has become a favoured spot to work, play, retire or raise a family. A wide range of recreational pursuits, educational opportunities for young and old, and a growing arts and heritage sector, provide Cranbrook with a "balance" seldom found in cities of this size. These choices make just about anyone feel at home.

Cranbrook also boasts some excellent attractions within our city:
- The Canadian Museum of Rail Travel
- The Kootenay ICE Hockey Club
- The NEW Wildlife Museum
- The Key City Theatre
- The Cranbrook Forest District's "Demonstration Forest"
- The College of the Rockies
- The Cranbrook Golf Course

Combine these points-of-interest with the nearby attractions of the St. Eugene Mission Resort & Casino, the Bavarian City of Kimberley and Fort Steele Heritage Park, a Provincially operated attraction, and you have a real "Destination Area" taking at least a couple of days to see.
With all the surrounding lakes and campgrounds, our legendary scenery and views, five Provincial Parks within 30 minutes of the city and 3 fabulous ski resorts within one-and-one-half hours of the city, Cranbrook is a favourite spot for animal watching, water sports, hunting, fishing, skiing and snowboarding. Adventure sports such as climbing & mountaineering, backpacking & hiking, backcountry & telemark skiing, and mountain biking are also very popular.

The East Kootenays is also becoming increasingly well-known as a world class golf destination with internationally recognized courses such as Trickle Creek, St. Eugene Mission, and Bootleg Gap all within a 20 minute drive from Cranbrook. Several smaller boutique courses as well as the excellent Cranbrook and Kimberley city courses round out the selection of golf courses, providing golfers of all skill levels an amazing array of choice.
